Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid that is closely related to Beta-Carotene and Lutein. Because of its unique structure, Astaxanthin provides a wide range of antioxidant benefits.
Astaxanthin has been shown to be a powerful quencher of singlet oxygen activity in in vitro studies (DiMascio et al. 1990; Miki 1991), and is a strong scavenger of oxygen free radicals, at least 10 times stronger than beta-carotene (Miki 1991). Experiments with red blood cells and mitochondria from rats have shown that Astaxanthin is 100 times more effective at inhibiting lipid peroxidation than is vitamin E (Miki 1991).
The results of these in vitro studies were confirmed in vivo with rats given dietary supplements of Astaxanthin and subjected to oxidizing agents (Miki 1991). The anti-oxidative properties of Astaxanthin have been demonstrated in a number of different biological membranes.
(Kurashige et al. 1990; Palozza and Krinsky 1992; Oshima et al. 1993; Nakagawa et al. 1997). Other tests have shown that Astaxanthin is up to 1000 times more powerful than Vitamin E (Tso, 1996).

Tocotrienol

Tocotrienols are a form of Vitamin E, having an unsaturated isoprenoid side chain rather than the saturated side chain of tocopherols. his unsaturated side chain, or trail, contains three double bonds, which enables tocotrinols to be distributed more efficiently in the lipophillic cell membrane bi-layer thus distributing their antioxidant properties more efficiently against free radical attack. As a result, Tocotrienols have 40 to 60 times higher antioxidant potency than Alpha-Tocopherol.
Tocotrienols complex are a fractional and concentrated extract of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a collective term for a mixture of 8 naturally occurring lipid soluble isomers (4 Tocopherols and 4 Tocotrienols).
Tocotrienols obtained naturally from palm fruit, rice bran, barley and wheat malt, but only in small quantities.

This initial study demonstrated the cosmetic benefits of oral Astaxanthin and Tocotrienol combined supplementation. Measurable differences started 2 weeks after supplementation. By the 4th week the treated subjects with dry skin characteristics exhibited: increased moisture levels, consistent natural oils, reduction of fine wrinkles and pimples. Consequently, these specific parameters contributed to the individual assessment that reported improved elasticity, reduced swelling under the eyes and better skin feeling after the test period.
